What are Age Spots?

What Causes Age Spots?

Age spots most often occur from an excessive production of melanin, which can be triggered by sun exposure (they are also called sun spots). Though it is not clear why some people get age spots and others don’t, genetics may play a role.

Age spots can appear at any age, but generally appear later in life (40 years and up). Frequent exposure to UV rays (sun and tanning beds) and having lighter skin can result in more noticeable spots.

Though age spots are harmless, it is wise to get them checked out to ensure that they are age spots and not another skin condition. Once confirmed as age spots, you can undergo treatments that lighten the spots for a more even skin tone.
