October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and here at Allura, we’re highlighting one of our treatments available that breast cancer patients can use to help them feel back to their old selves and improve their quality of life. MonaLisa Touch is a laser-based medical treatment that was FDA cleared in 2014 to help with symptoms from vaginal atrophy. This laser treatment is used on women of all ages across the world who are concerned with or suffering from symptoms of vaginal atrophy, such as pain with intercourse and vaginal dryness. Many women who have been treated for breast cancer suffer from vaginal atrophy symptoms related to chemotherapy and endocrine therapies such as Tamoxifen and Arimidex. MonaLisa Touch treatment stimulates collagen production in the vaginal tissue with increased blood flow which in turn improves vaginal health, elasticity and lubrication.

Vaginal Health

Breast cancer treatments, especially chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, can lead to hormonal changes that may result in vaginal dryness, atrophy, and discomfort. MonaLisa Touch stimulates collagen production in the vaginal tissues in addition to increased blood flow, which can improve vaginal health by increasing elasticity and lubrication. This can alleviate pain and discomfort associated with intercourse and other vaginal symptoms, thereby improving a breast cancer patient’s overall quality of life.

Sexual Function

Changes in sexual function can be a major side effect after breast cancer treatment, which can be overwhelming for the patient. MonaLisa Touch can enhance a patient’s sexual function by improving vaginal health and sensitivity in the vaginal area. Improved sexual function is incredibly important to breast cancer survivors looking to regain a sense of normalcy and intimacy after cancer treatment.

Urinary Incontinence

Some breast cancer patients may experience urinary incontinence as a side effect of treatment, especially if they have undergone surgeries or have weakened pelvic floor muscles. MonaLisa Touch can help strengthen the vaginal and pelvic floor tissues, potentially reducing urinary incontinence symptoms.

Emotional Well-Being

Addressing vaginal health issues can contribute to an improved sense of well-being and self-esteem, which is particularly important for breast cancer patients dealing with the emotional and physical challenges of their diagnosis and treatment. It’s important to note that MonaLisa Touch is typically recommended after consultation with a healthcare provider who is familiar with the patient’s medical history, including their breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plan. Additionally, not all breast cancer patients may be suitable candidates for MonaLisa Touch, so it’s crucial to have a thorough discussion with a medical professional to determine the best course of action for addressing any post-treatment symptoms or side effects. Here at Allura, we have two physicians, a nurse practitioner and a physician assistant on staff who are able to evaluate and treat patients with the MonaLisa Laser. Please reach out to schedule a consultation to see if you would be a good candidate for MonaLisa Touch.
